Jacob Humphrey enlisted on August 1, 1861, and was mustered in as a corporal in Company G, 1st Missouri Cavalry at Jefferson Barracks on September 6, 1861; he was appointed sergeant on March 1, 1863.
The regiment’s 3rd Battalion (including Company G) participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge in March 1862, and spent the remainder of the war engaged in fighting guerillas, scouting and reconnaissance duties in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and southeast Missouri.
Humphrey was mustered out of the service on August 20, 1864, at St. Louis.
