Stephen H. Andrews had the distinction of serving in two theaters during the Civil War. The Junction City, Kansas resident first enlisted in Company B, 2nd Kansas Infantry as first sergeant on May 14, 1861. After fighting at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861, he was mustered out with the regiment on October 31, 1861.
Andrews left for Chelsea, Massachusetts, where he enlisted in Company A, 35th Massachusetts Infantry on August 1, 1862; he was commissioned a captain a few days later. Andrews was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, and resigned from the army on April 24, 1863.
