Warren Lawrence served as colonel of the 2nd Kansas State Militia Regiment from September 19 to November 18, 1863, when he resigned his commission.

Lawrence also served as the Kansas Secretary of State from January 12, 1863, through January 9, 1865.

He died on August 20, 1906, in Mentor, Ohio.
