Thomas Hatfield enlisted as a corporal in Company B, 18th Missouri Infantry, on June 17, 1861, at Laclede, Missouri. He was promoted to second sergeant on August 31, 1861, to first sergeant on May 1, 1862, second lieutenant on July 29, 1864, first lieutenant on April 30, 1865, and to captain on June 16, 1865.
Hatfield and the 18th Missouri Infantry saw action at Shiloh and Corinth, through the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s “March to the Sea,” and at Bentonville.
Captain Hatfield and the 18th Missouri Infantry were mustered out of service on July 18, 1865.
