Mexican-American War veteran John A. Fisher enlisted as a lieutenant in Company D, 23rd Missouri Infantry, on August 24, 1861, at Eagleville, Missouri. On April 6, 1862, the regiment was engaged in the Battle of Shiloh and Lieutenant Fisher and his brother Eugene B. Fisher were captured and held as prisoners of war. John A. Fisher was paroled and released on October 12, 1862, but submitted his resignation in January 1863, citing health reasons, and was discharged on January 13, 1863.

He died in Chillicothe, Ohio, on July 12, 1916.
